Product Information

Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) spray contains capsaicin, a compound derived from chilli peppers. Exposure can cause temporary effects including tearing, coughing, a burning sensation and impaired vision.

The supplied product information states that the effects of OC spray can persist for a period following exposure. The duration and severity of effects can vary between individuals and circumstances.

Western Australia

Under the current Western Australian Weapons Regulations 1999, a person may carry or possess a capsicum spray weapon where they do so for the purpose of lawful defence in circumstances they have reasonable grounds to apprehend may arise.

This does not mean that possession or use is unrestricted. The circumstances of possession and use must fall within the applicable legal requirements.

Northern Territory

Northern Territory rules have changed since the original version of this page. An OC spray trial is currently in operation and has been extended to 31 December 2026.

Eligible members of the public may purchase, possess, carry and use OC spray for self-defence during the trial, subject to specific conditions. Purchasers must be 18 or over, provide valid photo identification, complete the required buyer declaration and purchase in person from a Declared OC Spray Firearms Dealer in the NT.

The NT trial also limits publicly carried OC spray to no more than two cans and requires eligible members of the public to carry a copy of their Buyer Declaration.

Importantly, NT Police states that OC spray cannot be purchased over the internet from a WA supplier for delivery to the NT. It must be purchased in person from a Declared Firearms Dealer in the NT.
