This does not mean that possession or use is unrestricted. The circumstances of possession and use must fall within the applicable legal requirements.

Northern Territory

Northern Territory rules have changed since the original version of this page. An OC spray trial is currently in operation and has been extended to 31 December 2026.

Eligible members of the public may purchase, possess, carry and use OC spray for self-defence during the trial, subject to specific conditions. Purchasers must be 18 or over, provide valid photo identification, complete the required buyer declaration and purchase in person from a Declared OC Spray Firearms Dealer in the NT.

The NT trial also limits publicly carried OC spray to no more than two cans and requires eligible members of the public to carry a copy of their Buyer Declaration.

Importantly, NT Police states that OC spray cannot be purchased over the internet from a WA supplier for delivery to the NT. It must be purchased in person from a Declared Firearms Dealer in the NT.
